Air Duct Cleaning: Be on the Safer Side

Home cleaning is one of the tasks that we all have to do whether we like it or not. Some do it everyday some do it twice or thrice a week while some of us would need a little scolding to do the task. We sweep and scrub the floor, wipe the counters, displays and windows, wash the sink and vacuum rugs and carpets. But have you ever done air duct cleaning? Some of us can do it on their own while others hire duct cleaning companies.

You may wonder as to why your ducts should be kept clean. We can all agree that we would want to have a clean air circulating inside our homes. The air duct system in a home is consisted of a branching network of tubes which carries the air from your air conditioner or your furnace through out all the rooms in the house. Overtime, with use, these ducts can get clogged with dirt, allergens, dust and debris. If these continuously build up, molds and different bacteria may create a home for themselves in your system. If your air duct system is unclean, chances are it is letting allergens or bacteria circulate in the air you breathe at home.

Air duct cleaning may be good for people suffering from asthma or allergies as this eliminates the system of allergens such as dust, dirt, bacteria, pollen, and mold spores. Exposure to these allergens may trigger an asthma attack or an allergic reaction air duct cleaning equipment. Those of us who do not have asthma or allergies are better off breathing a clean air than a contaminated air which may result to different illnesses. Better safe than sorry.

There have been a lot of debates regarding the importance of air duct cleaning. Cleaning the ducts is a good way for homeowners to ensure that the air the family is breathing is safe from dust, mites, allergens, mold spores and bacteria. Logically, we would prefer breathing a kind of air in our homes free from these than having all these dust, pollens, allergens, bacteria etc. surround our breathing air. Although the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has found no scientific evidence yet that regular air duct cleaning helps in improving the air quality, it however agrees with the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) which represents more than 1,000 cleaning companies all over the United States, that there is value in this practice. They however disagree on how frequent this should be done. It is recommended by the EPA that cleaning of the ducts be done when mold, pests or if there is excessive debris cluttering the system. NADCA explained that cleaning of air duct systems depends on factors such as local weather conditions, smoking, renovations, pets and overall cleanliness of homes.

We all want to be on the safer side. As the famous saying goes, an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.
